Shengxing Train Station is the highest point along Taiwan’s Western Trunk Line. Right on the platform, there’s a monument marking its elevation at 402.326 meters—it used to be the steepest and most scenic section of the entire rail network. The station itself is built entirely out of wood in a classic Japanese style, complete with a distinctive "tiger-tooth" roof design that’s traditionally believed to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune.
Back in 1998, after the final southbound train pulled in, operations shifted over to the new Mountain Line, officially bringing the old line's history to a close.
Today, visitors come to Shengxing with a touch of nostalgia. Even though the trains no longer run, the tracks have taken on a whole new life—you'll see newlyweds taking vintage wedding photos, off-road cyclists hitting the trails, and groups of friends exploring the tunnels. With so many "firsts" under its belt, the station was officially named a county historic monument by the Miaoli County Government in 1999, preserving this rich piece of history for generations to come.
