Bagua Mountain

Perched on top of Bagua Mountain, the Giant Buddha sits peacefully overlooking Changhua. Seeing its gentle, serene presence from afar is a familiar comfort for locals and travelers alike as they approach the city. Beyond its religious significance, it has become a true landmark of Changhua County and a total must-visit destination that draws endless crowds.
Completed in 1961, the imposing statue was once one of Taiwan’s top ten travel spots. Back then, it was a classic stop for school field trips—almost everyone in Taiwan, from north to south, has a throwback photo taken right in front of the Buddha, weaving countless memories into its rich history.
The Great Buddha Scenic Area has naturally evolved over more than half a century. Besides the main statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, the surrounding area is packed with great spots to explore. As you enter, you’re greeted by a grand ceremonial archway leading onto the "Buddha Worship Trail." The steps seem to climb straight up into the sky, framed by lush greenery and lined with 32 granite statues of Guanyin, guiding your way and calming your mind. As you walk up and glance to the right, the massive 22-meter-tall Sakyamuni Buddha sitting on a lotus pedestal suddenly comes into full view. It’s a breathtaking sight—and in fact, this massive statue was once the largest in all of Asia!
